- You can't cash it in until 12 months have passed.
- Cash it in before 5 years and the interest for the last 3 months is lost.
- Online, you can purchase up to $10,000 each year.

Calculating interest on a Series I bond
The U.S. Treasury sells I bonds, which are savings bonds. The Treasury is the part of the government in charge of its money. Two parts make up its interest rate. On the day you buy, the fixed part is set, and it doesn't change while you hold the bond (it can be 0%). Rising prices drive the inflation part, and the Treasury changes it on May 1 and November 1 each year. Your own bond picks up each new rate in its own month, every six months from the month you bought it.
The Treasury puts the two parts together to make one yearly rate. Because the inflation part is for six months only, it is counted twice to cover a full year. This is why the total looks bigger than the two numbers added up. The calculator works it out for you, so you don't have to.
View the math
fixed rate + 2 × semiannual inflation rate + fixed rate × semiannual inflation rate
"Semiannual" refers to a six month period. Rounded to two decimal places, the total never falls below 0%. A $25 bond's value is found by the calculator, rounded to the nearest cent, then multiplied to match the amount you paid. The government's savings bond website, TreasuryDirect, works the same way, so the numbers line up with your TreasuryDirect account and the Savings Bond Calculator there.
Every six months your bond gets a new rate, counted from the month of purchase. Every month, interest is earned. Every six months, the interest earned is added to the bond, so from then on it earns interest too. That lasts up to 30 years.
An I bond can't be cashed in until its first year has passed. Cash it in before five years and the interest for the final 3 months is lost.

Common questions
What is my I bond worth?
Enter what you paid after you pick the month and year of purchase. Interest from every rate the Treasury has set since then is added, exactly as TreasuryDirect adds it. The government's savings bond website is TreasuryDirect. So the number you get here should match your TreasuryDirect account.
Why is the value in my TreasuryDirect account lower?
For a bond younger than five years, TreasuryDirect deducts interest earned over the final three months, since that's what you'd get if you cashed in today. Here you see two numbers. "Worth today" is the full amount with every bit of interest so far, and "If you cash it in today" is the lower figure TreasuryDirect gives.
How is I bond interest worked out?
One yearly rate comes from the Treasury joining a fixed part with an inflation part. The inflation part covers six months and is doubled, with a small extra added for the two parts together. When you buy during Nov 2026–Apr 2027, the result is 1.40% + 2 × 2.04% + 1.40% × 2.04% = 5.51% (TreasuryDirect). No need to work it out yourself; the calculator handles it. Your bond earns interest every month. Every six months, the interest earned is added to the bond, so from then on it earns interest too.
What is the current I bond rate?
Any time you buy an I bond between November 1, 2026 and April 30, 2027, it earns 5.51% a year. One part of the rate is 1.40% and never changes, while the inflation part is 2.04% for each six months (TreasuryDirect). Twice a year, the Treasury sets new rates: May 1 and November 1.
At what time can I cash in an I bond with no penalty?
No I bond can be cashed in during the first 12 months of its life. Between year 1 and year 5, you lose the interest earned in the final 3 months. Once 5 years are up, no penalty applies. A bond earns interest for 30 years (TreasuryDirect).
When are the rates on my I bond changed?
Your rate changes every six months, starting from the month you bought the bond. These changes don't match up with May 1 and November 1. If you buy a bond in January, its rate changes on July 1 and January 1. A bond bought in September changes rates on March 1 and September 1 (TreasuryDirect).
What's my yearly limit for buying I bonds?
Each calendar year, TreasuryDirect lets you buy I bonds online for up to $10,000. Purchases start at $25, and you can go down to the penny. Since January 1, 2025, paper I bonds are no longer sold. The old $5,000 tax-refund option has also ended (TreasuryDirect).
